Fremantle's Open-Air Photography Exhibition: Unveiling Local Talent (2026)

The inaugural PIAZZA Photography Prize exhibition in Fremantle is a celebration of local talent and a unique open-air gallery experience. With a $6000 prize pool, this event is set to showcase the diverse range of photographic skills in Western Australia. The exhibition, curated by Sam Bloor, creative director of PIAZZA, aims to highlight the artistic contributions of Fremantle's photographers and their impact on the city's public fabric. The theme of capturing familiar streetscapes and community characters adds a personal touch to the exhibition, inviting viewers to connect with the artwork on a deeper level.

One of the key aspects of this initiative is the recognition of local talent. By providing a platform for both established professionals and emerging photographers, the PIAZZA Photography Prize offers a rare opportunity for artists to gain exposure and recognition. This is particularly significant in a city like Fremantle, which has a rich artistic heritage and a strong sense of community. As Sam Bloor mentions, 'Fremantle has always been shaped by its artists, and this prize is about recognising that and creating space for it.'

The selection of 65 final pieces by Fremantle photographer Adam Kenna is a testament to the quality and diversity of the entries. The judging panel, comprising Christine Thomas, Marnie Richardson, and Ron Bradfield Jnr, will have a challenging task ahead of them. The categories for the prize pool of $6000 will be a true reflection of the talent on display.

PIAZZA, the venue for this exhibition, has a fascinating history. Owned by Bronwyn Owen, the space was bought for $12.5 million after years of neglect. Since then, PIAZZA has been transformed into a vibrant hub for community events, art installations, and revegetation. The focus on artists and their contributions to the community is a key part of PIAZZA's mission, as Bronwyn Owen states, 'Artists bring energy, perspective, and identity to a place, and that’s something we want to champion at PIAZZA.'

The PIAZZA Photography Prize exhibition runs from July 11 to July 26, providing a month-long opportunity for the public to engage with the artwork. The prize winners will be announced on July 24, marking a significant moment for the local photography community. This event is not just about the prizes; it's about celebrating the artistic spirit of Fremantle and providing a platform for local talent to shine.
